The series is currently being filmed in Montepulciano, a village close to Siena, Tuscany. In November 2015, the troupe will move to Florence, the city of the House of Medici, to film in the exact places where the most powerful family of the Renaissance lived.
As of today, the name of the TV series has not yet been decided: Italian press is referring to it as “Medici – The Kingdom of Gold” while US press releases are mentioning “Medici: Masters of Florence”
What we know is that there will be (at least) two seasons of eight episodes each. Season one, currently being produced, will be aired in 2016 and will focus on the life of Cosimo de Medici “the Elder” (1389-1464), interpreted by Richard Madden. Cosimo was the first family member to become ruler of Florence, after inheriting a fortune from his father Giovanni di Bicci (Dustin Hoffman), the man who started the flourishing banking activity of the Medici family.
What can we expect from “Medici: Masters of Florence” season 1?
I expect the series to be historically accurate (with artistic licenses, of course) and to show us the process that allowed Cosimo de Medici to become the “first citizen” of Florence, going through a conspiracy organized by rival families to imprison Cosimo and banish him from the city. I also expect the series to mention how Cosimo was the engine to ignite the Renaissance, thanks to his education and culture (this man spoke 6-7 different languages), and I hope his friendship with artists like Donatello will be highlighted.
