The first episode of Medici – Masters of Florence, aired on RAI 1 on October 18th reported 29.9% audience share. The persons who watched the debut of the international TV series in Italy have been 7,562,000. Even soccer on Canale 5 has failed to beat the first episode of the Medici TV show as the Lyon-Juventus game totaled 20.3% audience share with 5,539,000 viewers. Debut record then, but in fact it would be very strange otherwise.
There were great expectations on the international TV series, which has as protagonists Richard Madden and Dustin Hoffman, and, in a way, the result it is not surprising. Since the beginning of the new TV season (September, for Italy), the debut of The Medici – Masters of Florence marked the highest share for Rai 1 in the TV series category. The details of Auditel on 18 October show that the first episode was seen by 8,037,000 viewers with 28.9% share and the second was watched by 7.143 million viewers with 31.1% share. Now we’ll see what happens with episodes 3 and 4, scheduled for October 25.
The first two episodes are not enough to express an objective opinion, but at first sight it seems like the international production and the cast of famous actors have given life to the series. However, there is a downside. The Italian dubbing (usually very accurate, not in this case though) makes the fiction a bit flat, like all the other products from Italy: you want to see the Medici in the original language. One aspect that in the long run could be boring is the continued use of flashbacks, while the environments, although beautiful (Tuscany, Lazio), are a bit disappointing so far, with not many scenes actually filmed in Florence.
